My name is Samantha Redles and I am a graduate student at The Maryland Institute College of Art's Curatorial Practice MFA Program. I am currently in the process of researching and carrying out my thesis, which will be an exhibition in April, 2015.
Hand painted signs is my topic of choice. Why hand painted signs? First let me give you some background. As an undergraduate I double majored in Art History and Marketing. One of the first lessons I learned in Marketing were the Four "P"s of Marketing: Product, Price, Place, and Promotion. Promotion was probably the most interesting to me because advertising and promoting your brand are segments within promotion. Why did it interest me? Because advertising and branding is the visual language and identity businesses have to inform their customers who they are, what products and services they offer, and what and who they represent. A business' identity is a consistent typography, image, and color palette that is represented through all its office supplies, business cards, letter heads, but most importantly it is represented on its sign.
A sign is the face of the business and it is the basis of trade, industry, and commerce. Without signs
